Let me be honest: I used to think oil cleansers were for people who wore a full face of makeup every day and had spa-like towel-warming setups at home. Not me. But lately, TikTok has been flooded with people double cleansing like their skin depends on it and so I got curious.
So, what is double cleansing?
Double cleansing is basically a two-step face wash. First, you use an oil-based cleanser to break down makeup, sunscreen, and excess oil. Then you follow up with a water-based cleanser to actually clean your skin. TikTok is swearing by it, especially for acne-prone or oily skin types.
But the twist? A lot of creators are saying the oil step is the real game-changer, even if you don’t wear makeup. Cue thousands of side-by-side “look how dirty my skin actually was” videos. Gross but compelling.
Does it actually work?
Short answer: yes. And it’s not just TikTok hype, dermatologists have been behind this method for a while. Oil attracts oil, so oil-based cleansers do a great job of dissolving sebum and grime that water-based cleansers just can’t touch. Especially helpful if you wear mineral sunscreen (which clings like a stage-5 ex), or live in a city full of pollution.
A 2013 study in Dermatology Reports even showed that oil cleansing didn’t increase breakouts and could improve hydration. That said…
What’s the catch?
Here’s where TikTok gets a little messy (literally): not all oils belong on your face. Some people are slathering on straight coconut oil and wondering why they’re breaking out. (Please don’t.)
Also, if you’re using a heavy oil but not following with a water-based cleanser? You’re basically marinating your pores in leftover residue.
What actually works (and won’t destroy your barrier)?
If you're ready to dip your toe into double cleansing, here’s what I recommend, starting with the oil phase:
💸 Drugstore Faves:
The Inkey List Oat Cleansing Balm – Gentle, non-stripping, and great for dry or sensitive skin.
CeraVe Hydrating Foaming Oil Cleanser with Squalane – Affordable and super lightweight, doesn’t leave that greasy film.
💎 Premium Picks:
Then I Met You Living Cleansing Balm – Has a cult following and lives up to the hype.
DHC Deep Cleansing Oil – A Japanese classic that melts off waterproof anything.
Follow it up with your go-to water-based cleanser (gel, foam, cream, whatever suits your skin type).
Am I now an oil cleansing convert? Yeah, kind of. My skin feels softer, my pores look less like tiny sinkholes, and I’m breaking out less. If your skin’s been feeling meh lately, especially at night, this is an easy switch that could seriously upgrade your glow game.
Just promise me you’ll pick the right oil, and always follow with a second cleanse.
